Waiting for happiness
By Abderrahmane Sissako
With Khatra Ould Abdel Kader, Maata Ould Mohamed Abeid, Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Mohamed
Release date January 15, 2003
Synopsis
Nouadhibou is a small fishing town nestled on a peninsula on the Mauritanian coast. Abdallah reunites with his mother there while awaiting his departure for Europe. In this place of exile and fragile hopes, the young man, who does not understand the language, tries to decipher the world around him: Nana, a sensual young woman who seeks to seduce him; Makan, who, like him, dreams of Europe; Maata, a former fisherman turned electrician; and his apprentice disciple, Khatra. It is Khatra, the mischievous child, who teaches Abdallah the local language so that he can break the silence to which he is condemned.
These communities cross and uncross paths before our eyes, their gaze fixed on the horizon, waiting for a hypothetical happiness...
