Jamal and Enayatullah are two Afghan cousins who live in Peshawar, Pakistan. An orphan, Jamal lives in the huge Shamshatoo refugee camp and earns one dollar a day in a workshop. Enayatullah works in the family shop. To escape poverty and seek a better life, his uncle decides that Enayatullah should be sent to England. Jamal persuades the family that he too must make the journey. They join the million refugees who each year put their lives in the hands of smugglers.
