The comedy of innocence
By Raoul Ruiz
Starring Isabelle Huppert, Jeanne Balibar, Charles Berling, Denis Podalydès
Release date February 28, 2001
Synopsis
Camille, a nine-year-old boy, leads a comfortable life in his parents' middle-class apartment and owns a small DV camera with which he films whatever he likes.
On his birthday, a seemingly innocuous question greatly amuses his mother, father, and uncle, who are gathered around the family table: "And you, Mom, where were you when I was born?" The question is dismissed with a smile, but things take a turn for the worse when Camille announces to his mother that he no longer wants to call her "Mom" but by her first name, Ariane.
A little later, he offers to introduce her to her real mother. He says she lives in Paris, that he knows the address, and wants to take Ariane there. Ariane gets caught up in the game, follows her son, and enters the apartment of this stranger. On the wall are photos of a little boy, the owner's son, who died a few years earlier.
