Synopsis

While Pius XIII remains in a coma, a tumultuous first conclave is held to elect a new pope. Sir John Brannox, a moderate and sophisticated British aristocrat, is propelled to the position of pontiff almost against his will, thanks to the maneuvering of Vatican Secretary of State Angelo Voeillo. Under the reign of John Paul III, the Church finds itself grappling with a strike by nuns in the Sistine Chapel.
